Re: Wells of the Rees by Anonymous on Sunday, 17 October 2021
Dear Madam, I have recently come to live in Annan. I was born in Edinburgh. My Mother used to sing a song about the Wells o' Wearie, these were Holy Wells, near Arthur's Seat, now apparently, sadly no more. My neighbour was telling me he has always lived in Annan. He says that infact, there are Wells, I take it he means ancient Well springs in our back gardens! Do you possibly know of any? Waterfoot Road backs on to our road, being Hallmeadow Place. My late Father used to water divine, using two hazel twigs or branches especially for emergency purposes. Do you know anything about the art of Divination? I have never tried it myself, but would like to develop the art, if it is bestowed on me.6

The Wells of the Rees are three springs, long since dried up, located within the ruins of Killgallioch Church. It is signposted off the New Luce to Bargrennan stage of the Southern Upland Way. If you park in the layby short of Balmurrie farm it is at least a 5 mile walk to the Well of the Rees. Of course there are Cairn na Gath, the Beehive Bothy and Laggangarn Stones to visit in between, so at 2.5 miles walked per site visited it is good value.
