St Nectan's Well (Welcombe)
St Nectan's Well (Welcombe) submitted by KiwiBetsy : St Nectan was a Dark Age Welsh saint with another well just up the road at Stoke. Water from the well is used in the church for baptisms but on the day we visited, the well was in use for a different purpose. Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Devon

St Nectan’s Well sits just across the road from St Nectan’s Church in Welcombe.

A small niche is located just above the opening at the front of the well. Unfortunately it is empty (except for a fern) but looks as if it probably contained a statue of the saint. The present wellhouse and church date from about 1508 but the well had been a holy spot hundreds of years prior to that and was probably responsible for the name Welcome which means ‘spring valley’. Welcombe was mentioned in King Alfred's will dated 881AD.

St Nectan's Well (Welcombe) submitted by cazzyjane : St Nectan's Well. There is a framed postcard of St Nectan in the little niche where once a small statue of the saint would have stood. The well is in very good condition and has lovely clear water that has been used for baptisms (Vote or comment on this photo)

St Nectan's Well (Welcombe) submitted by cazzyjane : St Nectan's Well. Very easy to get to being situated on the roadside across from the parish church. It reminds me of a minature cornish engine house! (Vote or comment on this photo)
