Maen Hir Farm 4
Maen Hir Farm 4 submitted by pab : Site in Carmarthenshire (Sir Caerfyrddin) The undulations on the top of this wonderful stone made me try and find echos in the Precelli Hills on the horizon behind it... None found! (Vote or comment on this photo)
Standing Stone (Menhir) in Carmarthenshire (Sir Caerfyrddin)

Within the circuit of the Glandy Cross Complex, this field in which this stone is located is known to the owner as the 'Stone field'. The farm itself is actually called Maen Hir (Maen=stone, Hir = long/tall), the name from which the term menhir no doubt originates. It is close to the Maen Hir Farm Stones 1-3 entered on the Portal by Vicki.

The current farmer was happy for me to go to the stone itself, as there were no crops or stock at the time - but permission really would be needed as access is through a working farmyard.

There are clear signs of the stone having been used as a gatepost, which (in its position in the middle of a large, well-established field!) lends weight to the farmer's comment that he understood it might have been moved to its current location 'comparatively' recently.

The current OS maps give its present position accurately and precisely, so more research will be needed to establish just how ancient it really is in its present location. This uncertainty is reflected in the RACHM entry (NPRN304266) - "This 5' high standing stone is claimed as the capstone of a dispearsed (sic) cromlech, however the name 'Maen Hir' would seem to contradict this".

It looks wonderful though!!
