Nanna's Cave
Nanna's Cave submitted by pab : Site in Pembrokeshire (Sir Benfro) A closer view of the entrance to Nanna's Cave. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Nanna's Cave is set high above the current sea level on the eastern coastline of Caldey Island, off Tenby. It has probably been occupied for 10,000 years, when the view across to the Gower was over dry land.

It is described by RCAHMW as '..a rectangular cave, 3.0m wide by 3.5m hign and 5.0m deep. Finds...range from Mesolithic to medieval.' Apart from human remains, finds have included remains of animals long since extinct on these islands.

I would just describe it as absolutely wonderful, full of atmosphere, and a very special place. It was so easly to put yourself back in time to the families watching the sun rise across the forested plain to the Gower, just as I did over the sea last week.

I have no idea where the name 'Nanna' came from, but I hope to find out! As for the ratings I have given...condition really has to be perfect, as it is still very much a cave! Ambience is certainly a 5 - it is one of those places which draws you to it, like a magnet. The 2 rating for access is due to you needing to get a boat across from Tenby, and then doing a little bit of clambering!

Nanna's Cave
Nanna's Cave submitted by pab : Site in Pembrokeshire (Sir Benfro) Our ancestors may have preferred to have had dry land below them for hunting, but I rather liked having the sea to help set off the rising sun. In case anyone wonders, no- the picture hasn't been alterred at all, this is just as seen...wonderful! (2 comments - Vote or comment on this photo)

Nanna's Cave submitted by pab : Site in Pembrokeshire (Sir Benfro) The view from inside the cave at sunrise just takes you straight back thousands of years...a wonderful way to start and celebrate a new day. (1 comment - Vote or comment on this photo)

Nanna's Cave
Nanna's Cave submitted by pab : Site in Pembrokeshire (Sir Benfro) Set high on the east-facing cliffs of Caldey Island, Nanna's Cave has been used as a home & shelter for thousands of years. Caldey Island is now separated from the mainland by the sea, but the cave once looked over good hunting ground. Tenby (3 miles away) can be seen on the right of this picture. I went looking for this yesterday on my annual holiday visit to Caldey.I tried to walk round at low tide but could not get round the rocks. I could see no obvious path from the cliff top.I followed the path from the Abbey through the woods to a shed which has a sign saying 'Rodenticide -keep dogs on a lead' Then headed for the cliff top and turned left but I could find no sign of a path down to the cave.
Any suggestion of how to get to it please?
