macd visited on 29th Jul 2023 It has been tidied up quite a bit since my last visit in 2014 and the interior has been emptied out and levelled off with hardcore. It's a bit neat now! I'm not sure how much is original and how much has been rebuilt recently.

A site of this quality deserves more visitors however the isolated location discourages people. There is the problem of the rocky road after West Ardwell Farm however it just requires careful driving on a short stretch to reach the Ardwell Bay car park. There is a sandy beach for non-antiquarians to amuse themselves while TMAers visit Doon Castle.

Situated on a spit of land pointing out into the North Channel, Doon Castle, dating from approx 100BC, would have presented a spectacular sight when first built. The vast majority of Brochs in Scotland are located in the North West of the country and this is the best of the four or so examples found within reach of Stranraer in the South West . The walls of Doon Castle Broch are around 2 metres high and 4 metres thick. Unusually, there are two entrances, one pointing landwards and one sewards. Two distinct 'rooms' are discernable between the inner and outer walls.
