Bedd Morris A likely standing stone, but may be a more recent boundary marker in Pembrokeshire. The stone is located right by the Ffordd Bedd Morris road and even has a car park opposite.

The tall stone - believed to be Bronze Age - has suffered a bit as it has an Ordnance Survey benchmark carved in to it as well as various professionally etched comments about the stone being a boundary marker. Coflein are not convinced it is ancient as it was not mentioned by early antiquaries.

Note: Standing stone toppled by 'hit and run driver' but is it really an ancient stone? Hopefully the rescue excavation will tell us

I am from Pembrokeshire and it looks Bronze Age to me. (I have seen it). However, it may have been moved to become a boundary marker at some point in its history (not pre-history:-)

The Daily Mail have covered the story of Bedd Morris's 'toppling':

"It had been a landmark for 4,000 years - ever since our ancient ancestors hauled a two-ton 6ft stone to the top of a Welsh mountain.
Until a bungling driver decided to do a three-point turn, that is.
The monument, which is as old as Stonehenge, was flattened when a day-tripper reversed his car onto the grass verge alongside the narrow country road where it stood."

(Can't understand how this happened as there used to be a huge car park opposite!)

It just amazes me that we do not take care of these sites and leave them for modern erosion.

The stone toppled over on or around 6/7 October 2011. There was no evidence of any cllision that i could see. I alerted CADW on 8 October and by 11 October the stone had been removed (possibly by the national park?) leaving just the socket and some emergency fencing.

I hope for its speedy return!

Ancient stone needs repairs (Score: 1)

(User Info | Send a Message)
An ancient stone that has stood as a warning to against bad behavior for centuries is in need of repair to ensure its survival.

The large prehistoric standing stone at Bedd Morris, on the Newport to Cwm Gwaun mountain road, has become unstable after years of been shaken by the elements and passing lorries.

It is though that highwayman Morris, who lived in a Carn Ingli cave, gave the stone its name after he was ambushed by locals and hanged on roadside, and the stone was put at this spot as a reminder to others.
A National Park spokesperson said: "The prehistoric standing stone is a Scheduled Ancient Monument is an important local landscape marker and we do not want it to be lost.

"Cadw has approved a plan to make the stone secure by supporting and re-turfing the base. Care will be taken to avoid archaeological damage."

The work is scheduled to be carried out in the next few weeks.
