Hi there,

I visited Tregear Round a couple of days ago as part of some research I am doing for a book. To be honest I cannot believe more is not made of this fantastic site. Given its antiquity, it is in remarkable condition with the main features of the hill fort still clearly present. I notice that there is no ambience rating at the top of the page - I would give the site a 4. The earth mounds give the interior of the round an eerie silence but it is still possible to hear the wind trying to penetrate the treeline atop the earthen mound. The trenches that form the interior of the two rings are still deep and heavily laden with slate or flint - which may have been used to reinforce the earth mounds. Thick gorse prevents access at the perimeter but there is a nearby gate from the road (B3314) which co-locates to a break in the outer ring making access easy (Remember to lock the gate - sheep grazing) The ring mounds are covered in what looks like Hornbeam Trees (No doubt someone will correct me on this) which grow to about 12 feet in wiered contorted shapes. The place could be used for a film set. Visit the site, feel the history, hear the ancients whisper to you on the wind then take a drink at the very nearby Cornish Arms in Pendogget. The Landlord gave me directions after I missed the site. Its very close to the road but you will not see it I guarantee. Enjoy! L J Durrant April 2014
