North Sannox Forest Cairn by Andy B on Tuesday, 16 August 2016
(User Info | Send a Message)
Just to the east: NS 0106 4683 Cairn - In a clearing in the conifer woods of North Sannox, planted in 1957, are the remains of a cairn. It now measures 14.0m from northwest to southeast and some 10.0m from northeast to southwest. The most prominent feature of the cairn is a chamber or cist towards the lower end of the slope in the southeast. At the higher end of the cairn at the northeast are several protruding vertical stones averaging 0.50m high and with a maximum, 1.0m widths.Site identified during an archaeological survey on Arran and Jura by the ACFA.

Re: North Sannox Chambered Cairn by Anonymous on Thursday, 14 July 2011
The blurb from nicoladidsbury next to the photo of the North Sannox Cairn says it is known as "Lag nan Sasunnach" or Grave of the Stranger. It is not.
That name refers to an alleged mass grave further up the North Sannox Burn. It is where a group of Cromwell's men were attacked and killed by locals. It is old but not ancient at all.
And "Lag nan Sasunnach" translates as "Grave of the Englishmen".

I hope this helps keep your site more accurate.
