To visit the Nine Maidens you should with care walk south along the road verge to SW 93748 68225 and then follow the footpath to the stones. To visit the Fiddler you should walk with care northward along the road verge to SW 93748 68225 and then follow the footpath to SW 93935 68182. From this point the stone and vista can be appreciated. To enter the field permission will need to be sought.

TheCaptain visited on 28th Sep 2012 - their rating: Cond: 4 Amb: 4 Access: 4 A second trip to the 9 Maidens this week, the field was still absolutely sodden, and we were over our ankles in places, which seemed strange as it is all on a reasonable slope and looked like it should drain reasonably well. At the far side of the field are the Maidens, 9 evenly spaced stones, a couple of which are now only stumps. However, the field and hedges around here are littered with large stones, and there is no doubt that there once could have been many more in this row.

Nine Maidens Stone Row

Once thought to be the only stone row in Cornwall, but no longer the case with stone rows found on Bodmin Moor, this row is to be found beside the A39 near to Winnards Perch, a few miles southwest of Wadebridge. At the far side of the field are the maidens, nine evenly spaced stones, a couple of which are now only stumps. However, the field and hedges around here are littered with large stones, and there is no doubt that there once could have been many more in this row. The Fiddler stone a few hundred metres to the NNE may be the northern end of this alignment. (see nearby sites list on our page)

The row is more than 100 metres long and has grid refs of SW 93636754 to SW 93686764 for the ends.

This alignment is featured on the Stone Rows of Great Britain - see their entry for Nine Maidens, which includes a description, a plan of the row and its immediately prehistoric landscape, photographs of the alignment and its individual stones, access information and a list of online resources for more information. The SRoGB notes: "It is however not known with any certainty whether the Fiddler at the northern end originally formed part of the row. It is however probable that this now isolated stone formed the northern end of the row". See SandyG's plan of the row below and the separate site page for The Fiddler in the 'nearby sites' list below.

The row is also recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 430372 and scheduled as part of Historic England List Entry No. 1021223 (The Nine Maidens stone alignment, The Fiddler standing stone and two Bronze Age round barrows)

I think the grid reference for this site should be SW 93600 67500 and co-ordinates 50.470902N -4.909998W.

Thanks for spotting this, it has somehow got changed to that of the Fiddler. The 100 metre long row actually has grid refs of SW 93636754 to SW 93686764, I have corrected.

That must have been me, as I was updating the site page with information from The Stone Rows of Great Britain, and the grid reference Sandy gives is SW 93933 68211, which is that of the Fiddler. I'd already made a note to ask him to amend the ngr on his site page but thought I'd changed the grid reference here. Apologies for creating additional work. Well spotted.

Hi, Sunny. I remembered that after posting my last comment yesterday evening that the SRoGB entry says: "It is however not known with any certainty whether the Fiddler at the northern end originally formed part of the row. It is however probable that this now isolated stone formed the northern end of the row". This is also reflected in the Historic England scheduling and Pastscape entries. I have modified both SIDs and added SandyG's site plan to demonstrate the possible link. Any issues, please let me know. Thanks.

That takes an awful lot of unfounded extrapolation and speculation. I'd like to know if there is any evidence for this.

There is as much evidence to support this interpretation as there is to support the idea that all of the stone rows on Exmoor are prehistoric or indeed whether most standing stones were erected in prehistoric times. I think it would be possible to add your comment to most of the pages on the Portal. This is the reason that I do not accept any of the British rows as definite - the best that is possible is plausible. The evidence to support the idea that the Nine Maidens row once extended further to the north is based on the observation that there are many other examples where long rows are built to provide a visual reveal at their upper end. This is particularly the case in Cornwall where most of the rows have this characteristic. Whilst this evidence is circumstantial much of our understanding of British archaeology is built upon this type of evidence and to dismiss it as unfounded and speculative would seem a little harsh.

Historic England are supporting the building of a wind farm at the Nine Maidens. The turbines will be very close to the stone alignment and stand 110m high. According to the Cornish Guardian Historic England have said that the wind farm "would make this enigmatic monument once more easily accessible and in a setting that would allow a better appreciation of the monument".
