I have visited· I would like to visit

Anne T visited on 19th Jul 2018 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 3 Access: 4 Stane Alane (Achnabreac), Lochgilphead Cemetery: The time was fast approaching when we needed to head back to Armadale, but there were still two more standing stones we wanted to see. Looking at the map, the quickest way appeared to be to drive to the cemetery, walk through the cemetery and walk a hundred metres or so along the track that ran from its northern wall. This was a large cemetery with a tall back wall. Eventually finding the gate to the north western side of the cemetery, we let ourselves onto a long, almost straight lane. This stone obviously hadn’t been visited in a while, as it was almost half covered in ferns to the front and back. In taking a closer look at the back of the stone, we discovered it was on a slight mound. Canmore confirms it is incorporated into a turf and stone dyke.

Originally a pair of Standing Stones in Argyll

The remaining stone stands almost 2.5m high and is about 1m wide and 30cm thick.

For more information see Canmore ID 39383, the most recent entry from 1981 reading: "Incorporated in a turf-and-stone dyke 30m N of the wall of Lochgilphead Cemetery, there is a standing stone, which measures 2.45m in height and 1m by 0.28m at ground level, with its longer axis aligned nearly N and S."

The stone stands by the old coach road from Lochgilphead to Cairnbaan and Oban (before the A83 was constructed in the marshy valley below). It stands almost 2.5m high and is about 1m wide and 30cm thick. Copyright Bob Embleton and licensed for reuse under this Creative Commons Licence.

Achnabreac
Achnabreac submitted by Anne T : Continuing another 100m further along the track towards the Achnabreck Fallen Standing Stone, looking back the Stane Alane was hardly visible - I've marked it with an arrow - through the bracken and surrounding trees.

Achnabreac
Achnabreac submitted by Anne T : From the gate into the forest just east of the stone, I pushed my way through the bracken and overhanging tree branches to get a look at the back face of the stone. From here, I needed to look slightly down on the stone.

Achnabreac
Achnabreac submitted by Anne T : We did push down some of the bracken to get a view of the front face of the stone in its entirety. It is on a mound.

Achnabreac
Achnabreac submitted by Anne T : This stone obviously hadn't been visited in some time. This is as we first saw it, having let ourselves onto the track from Lochgilphead to the back of Lochgilphead cemetery. The stone stands some 100m from the gate at the north western end of the cemetery. The track runs north west the Achnabreck Standing Stonethen back to the A816.
