Just before the farmyard go through gates on the left and up to the marked path to the cromlech. I was surprised at the good size of it and that I'd never heard of it before joining this site, these burial sites are commonly photographed and published all over. It was fenced off and the farm gates to it were locked so I only go close enough to take a few photos. Beautiful and spiritual place, with a bit of a wow factor when you first see it.

Double-Chambered Tomb in Pembrokeshire. Now badly damaged this tomb has its two capstones surviving, each supported by 2 uprights. The larger of the capstones on the eastern chamber measures 3.7m by 3.1m. One of the sidestones has been used as a gatepost and other large stones in nearby walls may also have been plundered from the chambers.

Sorry to disappoint Elvis fans, but St Elvis (alias Aelbyw) was an Irish bishop in the 6th century. He famously baptized a baby who would become the patron saint of Wales - namely David (Dewi). St Aelbyw or Elbyw has a holy well named for him at the nearby farm!

Located on a N-W facing slope, the tomb is one of three coastal burial sites in south-west Wales which appear to have been purposely concealed from the sea. A ‘double cromlech’ with 2 capstones is supported by two uprights. There are traces of a mound between both chambers and on the western side of the western chamber. However, both structures are today badly damaged. During the latter years of the 19th century, a tenant farmer from nearby St Elvis Farm was asked to stop ‘blasting’ bits of the tomb structure away. Text adapted from the forthcoming book: The Architecture of Death:

Neolithic Chambered Monuments of Wales by George Nash. Photographed during an Archaeology Safari of Pembrokeshire 1st December 2002.
