On my visit there was a herd of bullock around the cairn, churning the grass to mud. The jumble of large stones become a large passage and chamber with time and imagination. The site is off the beaten track but more than rewards the expenditure of energy.

Kilchoan submitted by mickm : Detail of the top of the chamber looking towards the entrance at the NE showing the displaced capstone over a lintel covering the central compartment. The side slabs of the front compartment are visible beyond. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Clyde type Chambered Cairn in Argyll, situated on rising rough grazing land on the western side of the lower Kilmartin Valley. Were it not for the trees there would be a view to the south over Mhoine Mhor to the Crinan Canal and the Estuary.

Kilchoan submitted by crannog : At least the capstones are kind of where they should be and not flung out over the field like so many other chambered tombs in Argyll. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Kilchoan
Kilchoan submitted by crannog : From some angles this looks like a pile of stones, from others things take shape a little more clearly. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Kilchoan submitted by crannog : beautiful with the late afternoon sunshine caressing the chamber

Kilchoan
Kilchoan submitted by caradoc68 : Got to use your imagination here has the stones seem too be in a little bit of a jumble, with none of the cairn remaining. Canmore site page.

Kilchoan
Kilchoan submitted by mickm : View looking NE along the line of the chamber with the slipped capstone & backslab of the rear compartment in the foreground. The site was excavated by Mapleton (& Greenwell) in 1864, who reported that the structure was over 8ft in height, which suggests that much of what survives is now buried.
