Porth-y-Rhaw submitted by pattersa : View of the promontory fort at Porth-y-Rhaw from the coastal path from the east (Vote or comment on this photo)
A coastal promontory fort in a superb location in Pembrokeshire overlooking the Porth-y-Rhaw cove. Excavations undertaken in the late 1990s indicated construction began in early to mid Iron Age. Remains were found of 8 roundhouses. Finds indicated the site was in use from the 1st to 4th Centuries AD. There were also finds indicating iron, bronze and glassworking took place on the site.

The site has a lovely peaceful atmosphere, you can sit at the end of the headland and look out over the sea and stunning coastline.

Porth-y-Rhaw Community Excavation, running until 6th August 2022 by Anonymous on Saturday, 16 July 2022
Following a season of excavation in 2019 and 2021, and a break due to Covid-19 in 2020, Dyfed Archaeological Trust are a community excavation within the internal area of Porth y Rhaw Promontory Fort running until the 6th August 2022. This project is being funded by Cadw and is being undertaken in partnership with The National Trust which owns the site, and Pembrokeshire Coast National Park.

The promontory fort is being actively eroded and in 2021 the aim of the excavation is to recover as much information as possible from the internal area of the fort before it is lost to the sea, or before excavation becomes too dangerous.

Excavations in 1995-98 revealed the remains of at least eight timber roundhouses, some of which had been rebuilt several times, including one in stone. Radiocarbon dates indicate occupation started in the early-to-mid Iron Age, and pottery indicates it continued into the 4th century AD.

The 2019 and 2021 excavations concentrated on the entrance to the fort and part of what is probably a stone walled roundhouse immediately to the north. The entrance passageway was flanked by walls made from massive boulders.

In 2022 the aim is to excavate an area encompassing a stone walled roundhouse surviving within the internal area of the fort that was partially recorded in the 1990s.
