Ancient Village or Settlement in Cornwall
Callestock Veor Round is an Iron Age or Romano-British round, The ploughed down remains are 63m by 55m, defined by an outer ditch with inner bank and a probable entrance in the west.
This round is visible as a cropmark on vertical aerial photographs: it appears to be roughly oval in shape and is defined by an outer ditch with inner bank.
The round is depicted as a circular enclosure on the c1809-1813 OS map, and on the c1880 1st ed and c1907 2nd ed OS maps. As the area was unenclosed in the mid-C19 it is not depicted in detail on the c1840 tithe map.
The enclosure is first noted by Tonkin in 1705, who described an entrenchment in the commons at Callestock Veor, ‘but not worthy of notice’. Tonkin’s account is repeated by Gilbert and Lake. Thomas in 1851 describes a circular entrenchment to the south of Penhallow, enclosing about three-quarters of an acre. It is included in the VCH as a defensive enclosure with a single bank.
The round was surveyed in 1971 by the OS, who described a small ploughed down Round. Only the outer scarp was readily visible though some of the inner could be seen, and a break in the West side was suggested to indicate an entrance.
Geophysical survey undertaken along the western side of the round in 1995 identified two enclosure ditches, as well as an external structure. Subsequent excavation in 1996 found this to be Bronze Age in date, probably pre-dating the round.
More extensive geophysical survey undertaken in 1997 covered the whole of the round as well as much of the surrounding fields. This identified a concentric bank and ditch, within an outer polygonal enclosure and entrance to the west. Ditches and other features associated with the entrance were identified. The survey also identified evidence for burning and extensive activity within the round itself, as well as further features which may predate it to the north and west.
