The Maen rock (Constantine)
The Maen rock (Constantine) submitted by maengurta : The Maen rock, sole survivor of a megalithic trio of monuments. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Natural Stone /Erratic rock, often confused with the destroyed Constantine tolmen, this 12ft bulbous shaped stone is incorporated into someone's landscaping scheme by the side of the footpath between Mean Pearne farm and Maen toll farm.

It was first noted by Borlase 1758 who dubbed it as "the great stone at Men" (maen) and attributed all sorts of druidic properties to it.

It is unknown whether the stone has any prehistoric significance however it is situated in an area once abound with antiquities, most of which were slain by the quarrymen.

A hundred yards up the lane is the site of the long destroyed Maen Toll, a gigantic logan stone poised on two points and the nearby farm Maen Pearne was named after a huge longstone of some 7 metres, the tallest in Cornwall which was sadly destroyed in the 1750's. Just across the valley is a small menhir reputed to be the marker or remains of a far larger predecessor.

This stone is in a beautiful area not far from other megalithic sites and is well worth a visit. There is another similar, possibly stranger shaped stone nearby very close to Pixies Hall at Trewardreva.

Hello

Thought this was interesting.

I have been researching more about my local area and the "maen rock" and found this information.

follow this link.

http://www.meiszen.net/family/rogues/reed.htm

Does this say the Maen Rock is at the bottom of the nearby quarry and in fact it is a second rock, the devils night cap that still stands.

Dear maen rock farm resident,
I think it is unlikely the stone has been moved at any point due to its gargantuan size and the fact that it is most likely still connected to the granite bedrock. There are drill holes in the stone showing evidence of an abortive splitting operation. The shaping is natural, caused by windborne erosion leading to a distinct underscoring of the rock. This process is much more evident on the stone at trewardreva.
The significance of this stone by itself is largely speculative however it's relationship to other megalithic monuments in the locality may be important. Most significantly would have been the location of the maen pearn, the grandest longstone in cornwall whioch would have stood somewhere nearby. My bet is that it would have been located at the highest point on the hill, where the farm maen pearn is now. Indeed I have inspected a broad, eartfast slab that may be the stump of the stone but was wandering if you had any ideas? Also there is a very large upright slab in a field at calevan which I have so far not investigated but appears decidedly megalithic. The area where you live was undoubtedly once very rich in megalithic sites and remains largely unsurveyed. My feeling is that even amateur fieldwork could uncover some exiting discoveries in your locality- so keep your eyes and mind open and let me know if you find anything

Thank you very much, I dont think the stone has moved but I have discovered a very large stone in a very overgrown bush, this seems to tie into the location on my map as the Devils nightcap a few metres away from the Maen Rock. Is it possible there were 2 or is this a very lagre stone that has been placed just for landscaping purposes.

Is there an email I can send a photo to you?

Hi

I have been trying to find out about Maen Rock and the devils night cap for a few months now.

What was the stone for or what is it meant to mean?

I live at Maen rock Farm and the land deeds show the rock on our neighbours land then in another location on our land Devils Nightcap.

Can you help me ?

Kind regards
