Holyhead Mountain
Holyhead Mountain submitted by Dodomad : Volunteers restore the hut circles as part of the works by the Holy Island Landscape Partnership. (Vote or comment on this photo)
The remains of approximately 50 farmstead buildings, comprising some round houses which would have had timber roof struts with turf or thatch over them, partly subterranean storage sheds, cattle shelters and work shops. The site covered between 6 and 8 hectares and was in use from between 500 BC until post Roman times.

Only one or two farmsteads would have been in use at any one time during this period of around 1000 years. Some areas were excavated in the 1860's and others in the 1970's. Inside some of the hut circles there are examples of stone furniture including ledges and basins. There are excellent descriptions of the site on notice boards and a car park right across the road from the site. Visited September 2010.

Holyhead Mountain
Holyhead Mountain submitted by Draconis : Like the Great Orme in Llandudno, Holyhead Mountain is connected with Gogarth, the Outcast, referring to the ancient Dragon. The mountain meets the sea at North Stack in Gogarth Bay. Its sheer cliffs are known to climbers as Gogarth. In truth, the entire mountain is Gogarth, the Outcast. I have known for some time the mountain-top is the Holy Head of the Dragon, but couldn't actually see it. Then ... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Holyhead Mountain
Holyhead Mountain submitted by raythemapman : I would like to see a reconstruction of this site. I am sure there must be an Irish connection, a very hardy people must have lived in this exposed settlement.

Holyhead Mountain
Holyhead Mountain submitted by TimPrevett : At the base of Holyhead Mountain, is this impressive, substantial group of hut circles. In the 1860s in excess of 50 buildings were recorded, but now numbers around 20. Active settlement was on this location for sometime, and not all the remains seen are contemporary with each other. Finds at this location, and very nearby, date occupation from mesolithic to Romano British times. The hut...

Holyhead Mountain submitted by Jimwithnoname : Heather and gauze now cover most of the site here. I'm sure the people were hardy, but I think they would have been very warm in their homes. I would love to live in one, or at least give it a try :)

On doing some checking there were two names for the site - the correct name is Hoylyhead Mountain Hut Group. The original page name was Holyhead Mountain. I have renamed and combined the two with the old name Holyhead Mountain and all the photos show up on this page now. Thanks for spotting it!!

Only one photo came up when I first loaded the site page and I did not see any link for other photos. Its a lovely site to visit on a fine day with great views to the coast.

Well, you did get lucky with the weather and the photos are good, but I'm sure at least three other people had posted on here, as I'd visited myself, and maybe had put up one or two, but IIRC, Nicola Didsbury might have, and maybe Shropshire Traveller?? (He never just puts up one. ;-))
Am sure I remember seeing some other nice earlier pics, as you tend to think.. "Ah, they had a good day", and "Yes, I remember that hut circle", etc.

There are excellent descriptions of the site on notice boards. A synopsis is as follows: There are the remains of approximately 50 farmstead buildings here, comprising some round houses which would have had timber roof struts with turf or thatch over them, partly subterranian storage sheds, cattle shelters and work shops. The site covered between 6 and 8 hectares and was in use from between 500 BC until post Roman times. There is a car park right across the road from the site
