Garn Cairn (Holyhead)
Garn Cairn (Holyhead) submitted by guile : Garn Cairn viewed from the slope of Holyhead Mountain. (Vote or comment on this photo)
A large cairn on a prominent ridge with amazing views to the North over Gogarth Bay and the Irish Sea and to the South towards Trearddur Bay and the Llyn Peninsula. It is constructed using local stone which must have been broken off the adjoining knoll.

To make the cairn prominent, would have been a big job as the nature of the site would seriously limit access to only a few workers.

The cairn is circular and measures about 15m in diameter. It has been cunningly built utilising the knoll itself, making it seem larger than it probably is.

This cairn has never been investigated and must have serious archaeological potential.

Garn Cairn (Holyhead) submitted by guile : The view from Garn Cairn is fantastic, this is looking towards North Stack. On a clear day, Ireland is visible. (1 comment - Vote or comment on this photo)

Garn Cairn (Holyhead)
Garn Cairn (Holyhead) submitted by guile : Dawn on Mynydd Twr looking towards Garn Cairn. By repute Capel Llochwydd and an associated well are near here, further down towards the base of the cliff. Folklore says the Romans had a temple here with a golden statue of a female goddess. I will never be going down there to look. (1 comment)

Garn Cairn (Holyhead)
Garn Cairn (Holyhead) submitted by guile : Garn Cairn and the summit of Holyhead Mountain. The summit of the mountain was very busy, nobody came near the cairn. Wildlife abounded here, I saw painted ladies, red admirals, dragonflies, swifts and or swallows, choughs and a falcon.

If you watch the summer solstice sunrise from this cairn, you'll get a double sunrise. The effect probably began around 1750 BC. Another one for the Archaeoastronomy Database.
