Notes from visit Sept 2013

After the Merry Maidens, Dad is thinking of going back to the car. No, not yet, there’s more to see, and it’s over the road again, across the stile and into the field of the Gun-Rith stone. Its hard work walking across this field, which like the Pipers fields is full of long wet grass.

I think this is the first time I have actually been to this stone, and it’s good to see it standing again, as last time I was here it was fallen. Quite a tall stone, it has a top heavy look, and if it is only planted as shallow as I think it is, it’s no wonder it falls.

I had a good look at the wall which curves around the stone, and the similarities with the Leaze Stone on Bodmin are clear to be seen.

The video was taken from Tregiffian burial Chamber. The U is also spelled sometimes with an accent over it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RxHaio9chc

From Pastscape:

"Bronze Age standing stone leaning out from a hedge is located circa 400 metres west of Nine Maidens Circle. It was excavated in 1871, but only one pebble was found. The stone is commonly known locally as Gun Rith. it is a Scheduled Monument."

Coldrum, if you turn 180 opposite of your street view there is what could be the remains of arcs of two circles? any ideas if this is ancient/modern or even do you know the name of it (if I could be so bold to ask)?

GUN-RITH RE_ERECTED 26th June 2003
The Gun-Rith Menhir is back in its old possition complete with its original lean ,thanks to the sterling work of Cornwall AU.
Until it fell it was aparently only enbeded about a foot into the ground so when being replaced it was fitted into a special granite base so that its full 12ft of hight would still be totaly visable and was less likely in future to fall down for another few thousand years!.

At the beginning of Febuary 2003 Gun Rith standing stone had collapsed into the field . The cornish Arch. Unit has the restoration and inspection of the surrounding area penciled in for the early part of spring quarter
