Caer Bran is an Iron Age Hillfort near the village of Sancreed in Cornwall. It is well over 60 metres in diameter and there are magnificent views of Mount's Bay and the surrounding countryside. Like nearby Chun Hillfort, much of the stone from this site was taken in the 19th century for building purposes. It can be difficult to tell what the condition of the site is due to the growth of gorse, so it is best to visit in winter when the gorse has died back.

Despite this, some of the stone walls are still visible and you can clearly see the outer ramparts and ditches on the one side. In a field near to the site there are meant to be the remains of an ancient settlement, and the Iron Age village of Carn Euny is less than a kilometre away.

We found Caer Bran after parking on the grass by Grumbla common at a small wooden gate leading up to Sancreed Beacon. Just down the road (in South West direction) there is a concrete driveway to a farm (also a bridleway). On the gate you will see a map guiding you to the site. It is a steep walk, but easy to find.

For more details, check Journey to the Stones by Ian McNeil Cooke. To find the site, you will probably need to use OS Explorer Map 102 (Land's End).

Re: A Guided Walk around Caer Bran, 31st July 2009 by Anonymous on Monday, 18 October 2010
This site, which is 122 metres in diameter, is an unfinished Iron Age hill fort with an earlier inner enclosure that turns out to have been a Bronze Age cairn enclosure just like the one of neighbouring Bartinney Hill. The central of three ring cairns (thought for years to have been a round house or hut circle) can be seen in Hamish Fenton's amazing kite photo, with the walls of a later mining track running through it (cleared out in this photo). The early ritual enclosure (only recognised about a decade ago) helps to explain the legend shared by both Caer Bran and Barinney Castle that nothing evil can enter them.

A Guided Walk around Caer Bran

When: Fri 31 July 13.00-16.00

Description: Join local archaeologist and lecturer David Giddings for an archaeological walk around Caer Bran hilltop enclosure. This site, which has recently been cleared, is a fascinating Iron Age hill 'fort', with hut circle that has stunning views across the West Penwith landscape. The walk will also go on to Carn Euny wells and courtyard house settlement. A rare opportunity to visit these sites with a local expert.
