Finlaggan
Finlaggan submitted by Andy B : Finlaggan Standing Stone A solitary Standing Stone , naturally predating the Lordship of the Isles. As ever various theories surround the placing and use of the stone. However in 1994 Geophysic surveys by the "Time Team" suggest that there may have originally been a line of stones marking the way to Jura. Standing Stone in Islay, one of a pair, the second of which has disappeared since 1716.

Canmore site no. 37701.

Update October 2019: The Finlaggan possible single stone row is featured on the Stone Rows of Great Britain website, which tells us: "known only from geophysical survey. No report on the work is currently available but the row would have pointed at and been at the limit of visibility to the Paps of Jura … the solitary standing stone at this location would presumably have formed part of the row".

The SRoGB entry includes a description, photographs of the standing stone showing its views to the Paps of Jura, a discussion as to the identification of the row (which was investigated by Time Team), access information, links to other online resources for more information, plus a photograph illustrating the viewpoints which can be seen from the row.

The site is also recorded on the West of Scotland Archaeology Service as WoSAS Site ID 2304 (Finlaggan, Islay).

The SRoGB also includes a link to the Time Team programme: Episode 1 - Islay (Series 2?). The SRoGB notes: "Geophysical survey carried out by Time Team. This suggests the presence of a line of at least five large pits aligned towards the Paps of Jura. Their reconstruction depicts a double row but the geophysics print out suggests a single row. Only one stone remains standing … A pair of stones about 300m away to the east could also be interpreted as part of a much damaged stone row, but it is more likely that they are a separate stone pair".

Finlaggan
Finlaggan submitted by Andy B : Standing stone, Finlaggan This stone overlooks Loch Finlaggan and stands about 2m high. A geophysical survey of the site has suggested that this stone is the only visible remnant of a much larger and more complex stone monument or ceremonial site.
