Elodin visited on 27th May 2023 - their rating: Cond: 2 Amb: 3 Access: 3 One obvious depression, along with very uneven ground due to turf growing over the stones. Not much detail due to the turf, but at some small spots you can see the stones underneath. The causeway was wet but not entirely underwater, there were stones on it which served as stepping stones for us. We noticed several stones in the water along the perimeter of the crannog. Unsure if those were placed intentionally or if they fell there over time.

markj99 visited on 22nd Aug 2019 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 3 Unfortunately I visited Ardnave Loch during the rainy season (it runs from 1st January to 31st December) so the land around the loch was waterlogged. I would like to revisit in the dry season (if it exists).

Average ratings for this site from all visit loggers: Condition: 2.5 Ambience: 3.5 Access: 3

Crannog in Isle of Islay. Ardnave Loch Crannog is in the west wing of Isle of Islay. Ardnave Loch is c. 2.5 miles N of RSPB Gruinart visitor centre on a dead-end road. The crannog is in the SW corner of Loch Ardnave c. 12m from the shore according to Canmore ID 37483 . It is connected to the land by an earthen causeway c. 6.5m wide just under the water level.

Ardnave Loch Crannog is an oval grass covered island measuring from 45 to 50 metres in diameter and up to 2m above the water level at the centre. In the centre there is a mound which contained “5 cist-like structures of apparently no great age” OS (N K B) 10 June 1978.

At the time of my visit, 23rd August 2019, there had been heavy rain. The path to the crannog and the causeway were under water denying me access to the crannog.

Directions to Ardnave Loch Crannog

Take the A847 Bruichladdich/Portnahaven road off the A846 at Bridgend. After c. 2.5 miles take the R turn for B8017 Gruinart. Stay on the B8017 for c. 4 miles to reach RSPB Gruinart Visitor Centre (follow the Nature Reserve sign). Turn R for Ardnave opposite the Visitor Centre. This narrow road with passing places is a dead end at Ardnave Loch. After c. 2.5 miles there is a passing place opposite an unsigned track leading to Kilnave Chapel which has an unusual cross. The total detour is only c. 450 yards. A further 0.75 miles later the road ends at Ardnave Loch.
