Cup and Ring marks or other Rock Art in Harris

There are about 34 circular man made hollows or cups Some may be mediaeval. Apparently some of them have been used for holding

Access: It is advisable to park on the main road and walk but occasionally the gate is open and you may be ble to drive quite close. From the main road Northton to Leverburgh on the righ hand side park at Kyles Lodge and Cottage. On reaching the shore keep on the seaward side on the fence and follow the ege of the grass for about 100mt. You will see and old ruinous stone wall that comes down to the shore. Stand at the end of the wall and note the left (East) end of the rocky headland. There the rock carving are on the smoother part. Be carefull on hide tides and rough weather!!

Hi Sithean
These are bait holes ie. they were made as mortars for grinding limpets etc to make ground bait, which was then thrown into the adjacent water. The method of fishing would be one of three (depending on local factors): a long rod with fixed line (no reel) and a 'fly' of sheep’s wool; a hand line with float; a tàrbh (pr. tarve) net, like a big landing net. Small immature Coalfish (cuddies) would be attracted by the ground bait, possibly Pollack. In the more 'remote' parts of the Highlands and Islands, fishing from these bait holes continued into the 1960s, well within the living memory of older people. There are hundreds, probably thousands, of bait holes in Scotland, located only in good fishing marks. They serve as a reminder of the resourcefulness of ordinary people when faced with hunger, and are just as interesting, in their own way, as the ancient cup marks of Scotland and elsewhere.

This is still an excellent place to fish - with stunning views of the Sound of Harris.

There are10+ sets of bait holes on the south coast of Harris, from the Temple (Northton) to Rodel. I have talked to people, younger than me, who remember people fishing with tàrbh nets at the holes near Rodel.

These days we call everything 'art' - football, cars, enbalmed fish, you name it - so it's probably OK to call this 'Rock Art' but I wonder what the folks who made it called it?
