Anne T visited on 18th Jul 2018 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 4 Torbhlaren Standing Stone: A farmer in a red tractor had been mowing the field here, but had left his tractor and mower sitting by the side of the gate with the light flashing. There was no sign of the farmer. We parked in the next layby down the road, where there was a passing space on both sides of the road. We let ourselves in through the open gate and walked to the standing stone. I had hoped to say hello to the farmer who turned up in his pickup truck, left it by the gate, hopped in his tractor and started mowing again, simply ignoring us (he must see plenty of tourists doing what we were doing). The standing stone had cup marks on both sides. The ones on its NW face were obvious and low down; the cups on its SE face I only saw when I looked at the photos, because this face was in deep, deep shade. According to Canmore, there was also a second stone (see ID 39544 below), which now acts as a bridge over the River Add to the SW of this stone.

Standing Stone in Argyll

Located 1 km NNE of Kilmichael Glassary, 190m N of Glenalva Cottage in a field. A cup-marked standing stone.

For more information see Canmore ID 39556, an extract of which reads: "This standing stone is situated about 450m NNW of Torbhlaran farmhouse in an arable field immediately NW of the public road from Kilmichael Glassary to Ederline (Campbell and sandeman 1964). Aligned with its long axis NW-SE, it rises with slanting sides to a flat top, and measures l.2m by 0.l5m at the base and 21m in height. There are up to thirty cupmarks on the SW face and a further nine on the NE."

The entry goes onto say: "About 570m to the SW there is what may be a fallen standing stone which measures 3.4m by 0.8m by 0.2m; it lies in an arable field S of the public road on the W bank of the River Add, and has been reused as a bridge over a ditch." See Canmore ID 39544 for more details.

Torbhlaran Stone
Torbhlaran Stone submitted by Anne T : Looking at the SW face of the stone, which was in deep shade when we visited. By playing around with the shadows on Photoshop, some of the cup marks at the top of the stone became visible. Canmore says this face has 9 cups, saying in 1977 the rings, radial gutter and longitudinal ridges recorded in 1964 were no longer visible.

Torbhlaran Stone
Torbhlaran Stone submitted by Anne T : Some of the cup marks at the base of the SW face of this stone; mostly small. Until I looked up the Canmore record (39556) I had attributed these as being mostly likely due to weathering, but no, these have been artificially formed.

Torbhlaran Stone submitted by JLT : Driving down the Kilmichales Glen I was pleased to see this standing stone , I did not relize at the time that it has what look like rock markings on it and will have to take another trip to this great place to get better view. The picture was taken from the roadside as the sun was starting to set

3D Model of Torbhlaran Standing Stone by h_fenton on Monday, 21 December 2015

3D Model of Torbhlaran Standing Stone. Photographed October 2015.

The model loads with a texture wrapped on it so you see it in full colour, but to see the cup marks more clearly I suggest clicking on the box shape in the bottom right corner of the screen and changing the rendering mode to Matcap.
