Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Gwynedd

This well is literally on the roadside in the village of Bryncroes, so obvious that I walked right past it and only saw it on my way back to the car! In most cases, these ancient holy wells had been hard to locate, so I have got used to looking for the give-away signs, not clear signposts....

It is on the main pilgrim route to Bardsey through the Lleyn Peninsula - Bryncroes was the last stop for pilgrims heading to embark via Aberdaron, and the church of St Mary and the Well are recorded as having been a very special 'station' on their route.

I do not think it was just the lack of effort which meant there was no sense of achievement on seeing the well - it is so well rebuilt that it has no sense of place left. Sorry to those who have kept it 'intact', but it left us underwhelmed. COFLEIN suggests that the steps on 3 sides are possibly 17th century, but the low surrounding wall is clearly fairly modern.

Unfortunately, we did not manage to visit the church itself, so I would love to hear from anyone else to see if that has retained some of its ancient spirituality and peace?

(For those unused to Welsh mutations etc, Ffynnon=well, and Fair comes from Mair, the Welsh for Mary - the initial m changing to f).

Ffynnon Fair (Gwynedd) submitted by AngieLake : The only splash of colour in this rather drab village was the collection of refuse bins adjacent to the well. Ffynnon Fair, I think not... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Ffynnon Fair (Gwynedd)
Ffynnon Fair (Gwynedd) submitted by AngieLake : This ffynnon is far from 'fair' unfortunately. The water was almost solid with gunge. (Faint-hearted, look away!) And someone missed the nearby bins and tossed a plastic bottle into the well... so sad.

Ffynnon Fair (Gwynedd)
Ffynnon Fair (Gwynedd) submitted by rogerkread : Nice well but not too well cared for. In the stagnant waters was a broken leaf rake, and yes that is a wheelie bin next to it.

Ffynnon Fair (Gwynedd) submitted by pab : Ffynon Fair (Mary's Well), showing 17th century steps. Water was definitely bubbling up in the centre of the well, but bathing would not be recommended!

Note for Admin....there seem to be 3 different ffynhonnau (pl for well!) pictured on this page - this one from Gwynedd, and Just3days' from Llanfair Caereinion in Powys and Kiwibetsy's from Rhuddlan in Denbighshire. Understandable, as they are all called Fynnon Fair (Mary's Well), but could do with tidying up to avoid confusion!
