Strange, as we've visited Long Meg and Her Daughters on a number of occasions, but somehow managed to overlook this little gem. Located just to the west of the minor road from Little Salkeld to Glassonby, just north of Tarn House, there is actually no footpath to the stone circle, which can be seen from the gate to the field. There was a local family who were walking along the edge of the field to the stone circle, so we followed them. Their children enjoyed climbing onto the stones and jumping off, and we wondered how many other children in times gone by had done the same! A few of the stones might be in their original positions, but it looks as if the farmer has re-located the majority to the field edge so he can plough the field, which is a huge shame. However, the stones are welcoming and still worth a visit. One stone has impressive spiral marks on it (I understand there is a second stone with rock art but we couldn't find it). There is a footpath running from the minor road towards Maughandy Moo, and just inside the car there are some more large stones which look as if they might have been part of this ancient monument at some point.

Little Meg
Little Meg submitted by Bladup : Showing the rock art at Little Meg. (Vote or comment on this photo)
This stone circle or kerb cairn is just north-east of Long Meg And Her Daughters. It consists of 11 stones in a ring surrounding a cairn which once covered a cist containing a cremation with an urn.

Two of the stones on the site are decorated with spirals and cup and ring marks. A further stone is now in the Tullie Museum in Carlisle for safe keeping.

For more information see Pastscape Monument No. 12218, the description of which reads: "The remains of a small kerb cairn, occasionally mistakenly referred to as a stone circle. It now comprises 11 contiguous stones, most of them fallen, surrounding the surviving traces of an earthen mound. Excavations in 1866 uncovered a cup-and-ring marked central cist containing an urned cremation. A spiral and concentric circles are also evident on one of the kerb stones. Note that the excavator also referred to a second mound circa 100 yards to the east, and another apparent stone circle (?kerb for a cairn) in the adjoining field nearer to Long Meg."

Little Meg
Little Meg submitted by Horatio : Rock art, showing the boulder that has a spiral on it linked into multiple concentric circles. It is believed that the crispness of the cutting may suggest that the work was done shortly before the mound was made. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Little Meg
Little Meg submitted by Anne T : Standing at the southern edge of Little Meg looking over the stones. It is apparent that one or two of the larger stones might be in their original positions, but most have been moved to plough the land. Still worth a visit, with a welcoming ambience.

Little Meg
Little Meg submitted by Anne T : Little Meg, as approached along the field edge from the minor road between Glassonby and Little Salkeld. The stones can be easily seen from the gate to the field, although are more impressive close up. Whilst there isn't a footpath up to the stones, the local family we followed up to the stones seemed to think the local farmer wouldn't mind as long as no one damaged the land or the stones.

I did want to visit this but the field had a small herd of over-friendly bullocks in it. another time methinks.

Did you know, Tradition states that should anyone be able to count the number of stones twice over and get the same result each time, the witch Long Meg and all her daughters will spring back to life?! Also, apparently should Meg herself ever be broken in half, the stone will run with blood! I hope this doesn't encourage any vandals out there to try!

The circle is right at the edge of a field - this was ploughed when we went so it was easy to see. It is located about half a mile down the road from Long Meg and can be seen from the farm gate where there is a pull in. One of the stones has a spiral on it.
