Dolmens de la Clape
Dolmens de la Clape submitted by richardfrance : Severely eroded and lacking a 'table' this is a dolmen reduced to its bare elements. It faces due S, like the other two nearby. Three metres long, by one wide. More on my weblog www.dolmen.wordpress.com (Vote or comment on this photo)

Near to a ruined Bergerie, about a kilometre south, then another kilometer east of Laroque-de-Fa can be found this necropolis, where the remains of 8 dolmens and burial chambers can be found.

Dolmens de la Clape
Dolmens de la Clape submitted by richardfrance : In one of these dolmens, 24 skeletons were discovered: all women, bar one man. This is just one of them, W-SW facing, shattered and scattered limestone in remote upland pasture. More on www.dolmen.wordpress.com (Vote or comment on this photo)

Dolmens de la Clape
Dolmens de la Clape submitted by richardfrance : We found maybe five or six of the eight dolmens here. This one faces 240 [W-SW] like half the others. The limestone is blinding in sunlight, shatters easily in frost - there are no covering 'tables' left. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Online research plus the excellent guide to megaliths in Languedoc-Rousillion by Bruno Marc, led me to this necropolis. The place - 'La Clape' - is not mentioned on any map, nor are the dolmens. In occitan la clape means the stoney place. And there's an expression 'Aco's pourta las peiros as clapas' which means carrying stones to the boulders - or coals to Newcastle . . .

The necropolis is in the depths of the Corbieres Hills, just beyond the tiny mediaeval village of Laroque-de-Fa.
Take the D1610 out of the village for about 1km. 'til you pass a farm building on the L. There's a lane-way soon after on L . Park here and walk the 1km into the hills, until you see a very small outcrop of rocks gleaming on L. There is a small ruined building here at the foot of the hillock.
You need to spend a few hours wandering around - and even then we only found 6 of the 8 dolmens. Most are in a poor state, but some are impressive in a simple way. The sum of it all is greater than its parts: the upland setting too is magnificent. We did not have the time to look for La Pierre Droite, located immediately close by the necropolis.
On the excellent French site http://www.geoportail.fr the coordinates are:
2.34'31" E, 42.58'57" N or 2.575277, 42.982500 in DD.
