Hotel du Tumulus is conveniently located adjacent to the giant mound. A small chapel is perched on the summit of the mound. There are two modern entrances, on the S and W sides, into the two chambers and passages buried within the tumulus. However, these are only accessible on guided tours. Despite the encroachment of modernity, Tumulus de St Michel manages to retain its gravitas.

Tumulus St Michel, just north of Carnac, in Morbihan, Brittany. This massive tumulus is 120m long and 12 metres high, with a chapel built on top of it.

Many artefacts were found during past excavations, lots of which can be found in the Carnac Museum.

TheCaptain writes: It was in the past (when I was there in 1987) possible to visit inside the mound and see the two large chambers and many smaller stone lined cists. The chamber is now gated.

There appears to be a 'Holy Well' about 50 metres to the north of this monument

Yes, there is, although probably several hundred metres rather than 50.

We do not yet accept ancient well sites outside UK, we have far too much data to handle anyway, but I often wondered about perhaps adding this one.

I myself visited here in 2005, while on my big trip round France, and when later typing up my notes into my records, it turned ot to be the 500th site I visited on the trip, so its sort of special !
