Kerlescan Tertre and menhir
Kerlescan Tertre and menhir submitted by LizH : This stone stands at the west end of the Kerlescan rows, but to the north of them, at the western end of what was once a tumulus. The small bear (Barnaby) at the bottom is from Hallbankgate school and is making a tour of pre-historic sites! (Vote or comment on this photo)
This menhir is 3.7 metres high and stands at the end of a 98 metre long tertre tumulus, some of the surrounding stones of which are just visible. It is at the north of the Kerlescan cromlech and the East end of the Kerlescan rows.

When the rows are open it is easy to approach. It is probably a marker for the tumulus, as are other menhirs in the Carnac area (though not usually at the western end).

The small bear (at the base of the stone) is making a tour of Carnac sites from Hallbankgate school in Cumbria, where his photographs will help children to learn about France - and to some extent, pre-history!

All sorted now, I believe, renamed and positioned, and a new site page to replace the old one !

Sorry everyone and editors; this is indeed a menhir in Kerlescan but not the one I have put here, which is the one in Kerlescan village (from the map). This one is in fact a 'new site' and is the menhir which stands at the end of the virtually destroyed tumulus at the north western end of the Kerlescan rows, at the open mouth of the western cromlech. It is just about 20 metres from the cromlech edge. The Kerlescan North cromlech is 90 metres north east of this menhir - not the Kerlescan nord menhir. My error for not reading the map well enough - sorry!

Please see my note for the Kerlescan north cromlech site. Could you supply us a position for this menhir - which I didnt thiink matched the one it has become associated with late last night !

Indeed. My apologies. I'm pretty sure, given your instructions from the other site that this is at long 03 03' 04" lat 47 36' 18"
it's a "new site" I think. Burl doesn't give it a name, just mentions it as being at the end of the tumulus (which I suppose could be the Kerlescan West tumulus? - and Kerlescan West Menhir? I don't know on what grounds you would name them!) Thanks for your help with getting this right and sorry about the error. Liz

many thanks again - I will look into this sometime when I have time at home with my books and maps etc, but can't now promise anything for a while. I have a fairly complete one for Morbihan, but I think I looked and didn't find this menhir in there last night.

"I don't know on what grounds you would name them" - This is always difficult, especially with slightly anglicising the French names. If the things are not on Mérimée as national historic monuments, on the maps, in books etc, then it can become very difficult. Although there are hundreds of sites in Brittany well known and well documented, there are still many hundreds more which are not. And Brittany is well served compared to the rest of France with books etc...

Often on the portal we have to "make up" a name for a site - in these cases we would go for the nearest name on the maps (for which we at least now have the wonderful Geoportail website to help us out) but this would still leave problems such as this at Kerlescan; North, northwest, northeast etc etc will probably have to do, until a French archaeologist or suchlike comes along to correct us.

I think this menhir is on the map I was using (but it belonged to a friend and I don't have it now). It is also mentioned in Burl's 'Megalithic Brittany' but he doesn't give it a name. Glad to see it is getting sorted out anyway, and sorry about the confusion. Liz
