TheCaptain visited on 20th Jun 2005 - their rating: Cond: 4 Amb: 4 Access: 4 This is an unusual allée couverte, not quite at the top of the Guilliguy headland, overlooking the ocean where the Amoco Cadiz was wrecked, and the little port of Portsall. This is a place which has been revered over the millennia, and still serves as a place for thought by the big cross, and the views are fantastic. The allée couverte was built in the neolithic, but much altered during the bronze age. It is now an L shaped tomb, the main part being 6 metres long by 2 metres wide with a couple of capstones still in place. At the eastern end an extra chamber has been built onto the south side, about 4 metres in length and still with one capstone. There is a nicely carved entrance stone between the two. It looks to me like the main chamber has been shortened here when this extra chamber was made, and a couple of stones still survive to the east.

Site names: Dolmen Ar Guilligi / Allée Couverte Du Guiligui /Sepulture a entrée laterale du Guilliguy

Site description:
Pointe du Guilligui offers splendid views over Portsall, the beautiful coast and this truly magnificent monument. The tomb is orientated appr. 115° (~WNW-ESE) and surrounded by a largely damaged oval cairn. Only few kerbstones are left in the southwestern part. The chamber is comparatively well preserved and was excavated and restored in 1991/92. Its groundplan is a mirrored “L” with the 4m passage being the short line of the “L”. Chambers length is appr. 7m. The chamber is subdivided by an orthostat into a 5m eastern part and a 2m compartment in the west. The western chamber part has lost its northern upright. Two chamber-capstones are left in situ at chambers middle. If the others were of the similar size 4 or 5 are missing. The passage was damaged during bronze age and lost some orthostats and the capstones. The entrance stone between chamber and passage has preserved its port-hole.
A 16th century cross was moved to the site at the end of the 19th century and erected close to the tomb.
