Re: Quéléne menhir by Anonymous on Monday, 12 March 2007
Just wondering, do you know what or where the Quelene part comes from or what it means??

FYI, Quelene name (more accurately Quélène with two accents) comes from South-Western Bretagne, around Vannes, from a village called Guémené-sur-Scorff (where people cook the famous French andouillettes).

The name itself is derived from Djelen, its previous pronunciation. In Breton, it means "holly", referring to the plant, and not the Saints of course. People who were called that way were druids, they were sorts of Celtic wizards. They had a spiritual role, and were at the top of the spiritual hierarchy. They resisted for a very long time to the influence of Roman Catholicism, before yielding and converting themselves to it.

I know that because that's my family name. Very few people still have that name today! :-D
