Robin Hood's Stone
Robin Hood's Stone submitted by vicky : A close up of Robin Hood's stone showing the weathering grooves. (Vote or comment on this photo)
A ring and cupmarked standing stone, set in concrete at the junction between Archerfield Road and Booker Avenue.

No longer in it's original position, the stone was moved in 1928 to accommodate a housing development.

For more information see Pastscape Monument No. 67205 which says that the cup marks are still visible at its base, not yet buried beneath the plinth. The entry adds this "Bronze Age standing stone, originally part of the complex of stone monuments known as the Calderstones which lie to the north east." Scheduled.

The Northern Antiquarian (TNA) also features a page for this standing stone - see their entry for Robin Hood’s Stone, Allerton, Liverpool, Lancashire, which says this is: "similar in size and appearance to one of the cup-marked Tuilyies standing stones in Fife, Scotland." The TNA page includes local folklore and includes an early photograph of the stone.

The Journal of Antiquities also includes an entry for Robin Hood’s Stone, Allerton, Liverpool, Merseyside, which includes a description, a photograph, directions for finding this stone and a list of reference sources for more information. The Journal adds: "In 1970 a similar stone was ploughed up in a farmer’s field at Haskayne, north of the city, and this also had grooves made by thousands of years of weathering. And so it is presumed this, and the so-called Robin Hood’s Stone, were probably part of the Calder Stones which date back 4,000 years to the Bronze-Age".

For the scheduling information see Historic England List ID 1020984, which adds: "At the base of the stone is a bronze plaque which announces the recent history of the monument: `THIS MONOLITH/ KNOWN AS ROBIN HOODS STONE STOOD/IN A FIELD NAMED THE STONE HEY/AT A SPOT 198 FEET DISTANT AND IN A /DIRECTION BEARING 7 DEGREES EAST OF TRUE/NORTH FROM ITS PRESENT POSITION TO/ WHICH IT WAS MOVED IN AUGUST 1928/ THE ARROW INDICATES THE DIRECTION OF THE ORIGINAL SITE'. Beneath this, in smaller capitals `THIS SIDE OF THE STONE FORMERLY FACED SOUTH'."

Robin Hood's Stone submitted by Postman : The year is 1928, a large standing stone needs to be removed to make way for houses, if I had my way I think I'd put it here too. But I look forward to the use of invisible force fields, cages make me feel uneasy. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Robin Hood's Stone
Robin Hood's Stone submitted by vicky : Robin Hood's Stone reputed to be from The Calderstones chambered tomb. It now stands in iron railings on the junction of Booker Avenue and Archerfield road in Allerton at SJ399863. This stone has a number of grooves on it similar to The Calderstones, and an old photograph shows cupmarks on the end now buried.

Taken from Stewart, L., Nash, G. and Cowell, R. The Calderstones - A Prehistoric Tomb in Liverpool [ISBN 9781527284685]

Interesting comment suggesting that the Robin Hood Stone was one of the original Calderstones but was moved by a farmer when road widening disturbed the site of the original tomb:

Page 43
"Much of the [Calderstones] mound was destroyed when a road running adjacent to the site was widened. Documentary evidence states: 'little hut or cellar' formed by stones, a cartload or two of burnt burnt bones were also found, although no artefacts were reported. The stones were laid aside on a farm, and some were later set up in a circle near their original site at the roadside by the entrance to the park. One is reported as having been taken by a Mr Booker and set up as a rubbing stone for his cattle, reportedlt the Robin Hood Stone. On a map of 1772 the former field where the Robin Hood Stone originally stood was already called Stone Hey, suggesting it was placed there before 1772."

Robin Hood Stone, Allerton, Liverpool by Andy B on Sunday, 11 September 2022

The Robin Hood Stone is a huge prehistoric standing stone. At over two metres high and almost a metre wide and half a metre thick, it is still an imposing figure in the landscape. Unlike most such monuments in the country that are located on remote moorlands, this is to be found at the edge of a Liverpool housing estate.

From Pastscape:

"
Robin Hood's Stone. A monolith; scheduled Ancient Monument. Moved from original position in Stone Hey in 1928 and re erected
with bronze tablet.

Robin Hood's Stone. A stone situated at junction of Booker Avenue and Archerfield Road, supposed to be of Druidical date.

Robin Hood's Stone. This stone is an ancient monolith and was scheduled in 1924 as an Ancient Monument. Due to housing development in the field where it stood threatening it with destruction, the stone was moved to its present site in August 1928 by the Liverpool Corporation and the Mersey Building Co. A bronze tablet has been placed with the stone and on it is the following inscription:-

"This Monolith known as Robin Hood's Stone, stood in a field named the Stone Hey at a spot 280 feet bearing North from its present position, to which it was moved in August 1928. The arrow below indicates the direction of the original site. This side of the stone formerly faced South".

The stone is of rectangular form and is approx 2.0 metres high by 0.9 metres wide by 0.4 metres thick. On its SE side there are about 6 or 7 very deep grooves where local legend has it that Robin Hood and his men sharpened their arrows.

Bronze Age standing stone, originally part of the complex of stone monuments known as the Calderstones which lie to the north east. It was moved from a site in a field called The Stone Hey in 1928 due to housing development. An early photograph depicts cup marks, similar to those recorded on the Calderstones. These marks are now at the base of the stone, buried in the soil beneath the concrete plinth. Scheduled.

Photographs taken by Simon Marshall show that the cups marks are still visible and are not burried beneath the plinth. "
