PAB visited on 1st Sep 2011 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 3 Access: 5 The Well is no longer alongside the busy A499 because of the new Clynnog by-pass. The Well is now in a cul-de-sac formed by the by-pass - it must have been awful to walk to it before! There seems to have been significant damage to the structure of the wall at some point during or prior to 2010, and the well was still locked in Sept 2011.

Beuno's Well (Clynnog Fawr)
Beuno's Well (Clynnog Fawr) submitted by AngieLake : St Beuno's Well, or Fynnon Beuno, at Clynnog Fawr. This was once very popular with pilgrims and looked very inviting from the road. (Beware when visiting, as this road is lethal - the traffic whizzes past about an inch from your nose; and, fool that I am, I was there at leaving work time! There are no pavements and it's quite narrow, with no verge. I walked along it trying to catch a glimpse of th... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Beuno's Well (Clynnog Fawr) submitted by Sunny100 : An illustration (by myself) of St Beuno's Holy Well 200 yards WSW of the church. It is a walk-in, square structure with stone seats and niches. On the pilgrims route, this well cured many diverse things like epilepsy and nervousness. It was favoured for curing eye troubles. Children would be brought here from far and wide in order to be healed of childhood illnesses. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Beuno's Well (Clynnog Fawr)
Beuno's Well (Clynnog Fawr) submitted by pab : Sept 2011 Angie's earlier photo showed the rather sad state of rubbish floating in the Well - this shows the capstones knocked in from the western perimeter wall..

Beuno's Well (Clynnog Fawr)
Beuno's Well (Clynnog Fawr) submitted by pab : Sept 2011: Interior of the western wall of the Well. It would have obviously been preferable for this photo not to be possible - but the vandalism at least means it is possible to see how the wall is constructed. Not much compensation really...and hopefully the site will have been repaired and re-opened for 2012.

Beuno's Well (Clynnog Fawr) submitted by pab : Sept 2011 No open gate now...when we visited in September 2011 there was a chain around the gates. The only problem with such chains is that they really don't keep vandals out - especially if they are loose enough to allow fairly slim people to squeeze through anyway! I don't know of any recent studies, but I suspect that most people engaged in vandalism requiring access to locked prem...

Beuno's Well (Clynnog Fawr)
Beuno's Well (Clynnog Fawr) submitted by AngieLake : St Beuno's Well at Clynnog Fawr, or Fynnon Beuno, would have the old Saint turning in his grave if he saw the bags of ....? that occupied the sacred waters. It was impossible to photograph the water without including one of the three or four eyesores lying in it. The plain surroundings would have been pleasant enough: a large-stepped layout, with room for several people to sit and contemplate what... (3 comments)

Hi Angie

Yeah, the Caernarfon Road is further removed - makes walking to the well much safer!

The bachwen dolmen is a little further on on the right hand side; I visited several years ago, but didn't last week. I drove down the track a little, parked considerately, got foul smelling defacation of some sort on my shoes, but had a good trip! It's a lovely spot.

Hi Tim
'Elf and safety' strikes again!

Hasn't the traffic been directed away from this site onto a new bypass? So that means current vibrations wouldn't have caused it, though it must have suffered in the past being so close to the highway.
I wondered, when visiting village last year, how easy it now is to get to the dolmen [Bachwen]? I didn't have time to investigate. Did you go there too?

Went to call in here Thurs PM, and it's CLOSED until further notice the north west corner of the housing has collapsed, most outwards, but some inwards, and I guess in the name of health and safety it is out of bounds.

It is said that St.Beuno died here and the medieval church stands on the site of his oratory. " The church and shrine stands on ancient megaliths, one of which is in the nave of the church, others in the foundations" May have been a stone circle.
