Holy Well / Spring in Cornwall. Standing at the foot of a rocky outcrop covered in trees the waters of this well, restored in 1852, are said to cure sick children, particularly in May around the time of Beltane.
Access The holy well is some three hundred yards from the church. It stands near the St Neot river in a level meadow backed by a steep bank planted with trees. One reaches it by turning in beside the Carlyon Garage.

This is what the church guide book has to say:

St Neot's Well (St Neot) submitted by AngieLake Just to prove that no fishes swim in the well today! (See 'Anonymous''s comment on his father's memory of a legend associated with this well!) It was full of modern-day money that had been thrown in for luck. In the left-hand wall was a small niche, and on the shelf opposite had been left various offerings, plants, special stones, etc.
St Neot's Well (St Neot) submitted by AngieLake This stone in St Neot village stands in a niche in the wall on the right-hand side of the road between the church and the lane (a little further downhill on the right) which leads off to the Holy well. It must have been important for it to be displayed like this. Does anyone know what it is? Above it is a small square trough.

Re: St Neot's Well (Score: 0) by Anonymous on Wednesday, 16 June 2004 | my father (who grew up in St Neot) tells a legend about the well. Every morning St Neot would visit the well, and catch one of the three fish swimming there for his breakfast. When he returned the next day, once again, there would be three fish there.
One morning Neot was ill, and sent his servant in his stead. The servant got greedy, and caught two fish, instead of just one. From that day on, there were no more fish in the well.
My father vouches for the truth of this story - he's never seen a fish in the well!

Re: St Neot's Well (Score: 1) by Rory on Thursday, 27 April 2006 (User Info | Send a Message) | | The intriguing stone, although of a considerable age, is simply a commemoration to the local tin industry being an ancient motar stone used to crush ore prior to the smelting process. The door to St. Neot’s well house is indeed now beautifully aged and brings to mind pictures of the original door to St. Ambrew’s Holy Well in Crantock before it decayed beyond repair. That well is now provided with a characterless imitation, cursorily executed and impenetrable. Catch this one in its finest most elegant state. | [ Reply to This ]
