Counting Hill Row
Counting Hill Row submitted by David : This is the terminal stone of the stone row and is shown on the O.S. as a B.S. Boundary Stone. William de Ferrers took over the Bolton leases after the Knights Hospitallers went and he set about improving the estate. Two of the surviving boundary stones are marked with a W, one - now missing - with an M. This one with an A is perhaps dedicated to a daughter - he had two named Agnes and another nam... Counting Hill Row
Counting Hill Row submitted by David : The little row, high up on the moors, is pointing at the sea - specifically Holyhead on Anglesey. The sky is probably to clarty to see it in modern times but the Winter Solstice sun should set between the stacks of Holyhead. It's never been tested. Several local placenames probably derive from this row and its calendrical feature. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Counting Hill Row
Counting Hill Row submitted by David : It shows up well in the snow and is clearly indicating a direction - pointing at something. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Counting Hill Row
Counting Hill Row submitted by David : Here's a closer view of the well preserved section of the tiny row. The stones are clearly paired and this characteristic is also seen at the Thurstones and Burnt Edge stone rows. It's not surprising as they were all made by the same people.

Counting Hill Row
Counting Hill Row submitted by David : It was in a hopeless condition then. The boundary wall runs across the back and is mostly ruined. The Dean Ditch is behind it and is probably of a similar age. There are no known stone structures that may be confused with these upright stones. Stonework just isn't made like that - not anywhere.

Counting Hill Row
Counting Hill Row submitted by David : It's not a very clear photograph but is important as it shows the direction the stone row indicates and some of the view from there.

Counting Hill Row
Counting Hill Row submitted by David : Here's the little row from the side, with Counting Hill behind it. These photos were taken before a disastrous moorland fire and the present condition of the row is not known.

Having looked at the rising and setting positions of the sun/moon the site looks somewhat uninspired.
The most southerly setting point of the moon is near Llangollen and nowhere near Holyhead.
Similarly, the most northerly moon rise is just beyond Skipton on the hills there and is rather nondescript - the profile of the hills is almost flat when view from this site.
The -e+i moon rise is over Kinder is a possible sightline but not very convincing and similarly the -e-i rise over the hills behind Macclesfield.
Overall not at all convinced.

The Counting Hill Stone Row by David on Monday, 27 February 2006

Sadly, drystone walls were not constructed in this fashion nor are there any indications of a wall here on any of the old large scale Ordnance Survey maps that are available (at Bolton Archive).

This tiny stone alignment is a double stone row and close observations will show that the stones are in pairs. The row indicates the most southerly setting point of the moon, at the Lunar Maximum, in the sea, behind Holyhead Stack, to the south, and the most northerly moonrise, at Lunar Maximum, to the north. Observations from this site must have been spectacular and windswept and, so far, nobody has offered to repeat these vigils.
