2.5 metre tall Standing Stone near to Mattocks Down, which was fairly recently damaged by a lightning strike. There are four barrows nearby.

Update November 2019: This standing stone is recorded as part of Pastscape Monument No. 34797 and scheduled as part of Historic England List ID 1016656 (Four bowl barrows and a standing stone 330m west of Higher Mattocks Down).

There was also a second standing stone at this site, but this has since been removed. To find out how these standing stones relate to the nearby barrows and the now destroyed stone row, see The Stone Rows of Great Britain's entry for Mattocks Down, which includes a plan of this prehistoric landscape, including the row, standing stones and barrows. Also see the 'Mattocks Down Stone Row' in the list of 'nearby sites' below.

"Writing in 1630, the Devon historian Thomas Westcote recorded that there were two massive standing stones and a further 23 smaller stones forming a prehistoric stone row on Mattocks Down. Today [in 1996] this single stone is all that remains to be seen; the site is protected as a scheduled ancient monument of national importance."
(See comment under James Ravilious' b/w photo for further info on the state of the stone.)

From the booklet 'Treasures of Ancient Devon', Devon Books, 1996 edition.

"The value of contemporary photographs is highlighted by the work of James Ravilious, who worked at the Beaford Centre for seventeen years making a unique photographic record of the rural traditions of North Devon."
"The Beaford Archive in particular has built up a unique collection of photographs of North Devon life and landscape since it was founded thirty years ago." [Writing in 1996]. "The Archive is now housed in the North Devon Record Office in Barnstaple."
