Stone Circle in Co. Kerry. 800 metres S of the Lauragh-Castletownberehaven road and 3.2 km WSW of Lauragh Bridge, are remains of a 5-stone circle beside a rock outcrop. Immediately S of the circle are 3 outliers in a line over 6 metres long. The site, as is to be expected, commands impressive views. To the S and E are traces of prehistoric field-walls. 150 metres W are remains of a probable stone-row. Immediately N of these sites, the mediƦval road from Kenmare to Castletownberehaven is still discernible as a wide, grassy track.

Cashelkeelty E submitted by frogcottage42 : THIS is the East circle at Cashelkeelty. The small flat stone at the centre covered a cremation burial(which yeilded a date of 970 - 715 BCE) The socket for the other entrance stone is present under the gorse at near right. Behind is the relict West Circle alongside the mediaeval road. The stone row is just out of sight 1m to the left of this shot. (Vote or comment on this photo)

There are several aspects to this site which is located in rough pasture, on a terrace to the S of a medieval road (KE108-013007-), on the lower N-facing slopes of Knocknaveacal.

A stone row (monument number KE108-013002-) comprising three stones, aligned ENE-WSW, and measures 6.3m in overall length. Excavation revealed the socket of a fourth stone to the E and stratigraphic evidence suggests that the row was erected some centuries before the nearby five-stone circle (KE108-013004-), c. 1m to the N (Lynch 1981, 64-9). The ENE stone (L 1.4m; T 1m; H 2.4m) is the tallest and the WSW stone (L 0.6m; T 0.5m; H 1.4m) is the smallest. There is a multiple-stone circle (KE108-013001-) c. 80m to the W, a fulacht fia (KE108-056----) c. 50m to the SE, relict field boundaries (KE108-013005-) immediately to the W and S, and a field boundary (KE108-013006-) lies c. 70m to the E.

The five stone circle (monument number KE108-013004-), diam. 1.5m, is represented by an axial stone (L 1.5m; T 0.3m; H 0.5m) with a flanking stone on either side at N (L 0.8m; T 0.35m; H 0.65m) and at S (L 0.9m; T 0.4m; H 0.7m). Excavation in 1977 revealed sockets of the missing entrance stones, a flint point and a broken sandstone artifact, possibly an ard point (Lynch 1981, 65-9). Based on radiocarbon dates acquired, the excavator assigned the construction of the stone circle to the period 970-715 bc [1308-774 cal. BC].

A central pit-burial (monument number KE108-013003-) is located in the centre of the five stone circle; covered by a single slab it was found to contain the cremated remains of an adult, which on analysis was found to be probably that of an individual aged between 25 and 30 years.

The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Kerry. Volume I: South-West Kerry' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009).

I see we have Cashelkeelty E as two sites - a stone row (the three largest uprights) and a small stone circle.
