West Park Crosses submitted by vicky

Early Crosses in Cheshire

The bases of three Anglo-Saxon cross shafts now sit in the middle of a children’s playground in West Park, Macclesfield. It is believed they may have been removed from Sutton where they served as boundary markers in Macclesfield Forest.

Another perspective on the cross shafts - looking towards the entrance to park from Sainsburys - the nearest, most suitable parking place to get to the park.

Close up of one of the crosses' relief pattern. The weathering and fragmentation is particularing clear here, and several pins hold some of these together.

Close up of one of the crosses' relief pattern. One of them does have a particularly, ahem, phallic resemblance - a detail which has not escaped the eye of one person appending graffiti! (written on the other side of the stone).

To park for these, and the nearby museum, you will need to use the car park at Sainsburys; if you drive to the far end of the car park, this puts you right next to the park. You can see the play area through the trees, and just follow the path.
