The stone is being encroached upon by the spread of ivy. My last visit (actually 15th June 1999) showed relatively little ivy on the stone; by April 2004 the growth was much more significant.

Maen Addwyn submitted by raythemapman : After visiting the Maen Addwyn Standing Stone we parked in a laybye 150m to the South of it. I looked to my left and what looked like a standing Stone came into view, I used my binoculars to confirm it was a Standing Stone. It is located at grid ref SH456834, on checking the map I found it was 500m South of Maen Addwyn Standing Stone and 500m East of Llech Golman Standing Stone forming a line of 3...

Maen Addwyn submitted by raythemapman : This stone should called The Ivy Stone. I have been visiting this Stone for over 10 years, in October 2008 the Ivy had nearly covered the whole surface of this large Stone, Only about 20% could be seen on the N/E face.

Maen Addwyn submitted by MAIGO : I visited it in October, 2007. It seems that it is covered by leaves on a roadside tree from a road. (2 comments)

If you visit here, and the school isn't in use (the school's layby is practically opposite the stone), a fascinating aside is that the Mathematician William Jones, who had something important to do with using the symbol Pi, was a resident and elder of the neighbourhood - look for the plaque - but in Welsh only...

William Jones FRS (1675-1749), a friend of Sir Isaac Newton and Sir Edmund Halley, was the pioneering mathematician who innovated using the Greek letter 𝛑 to refer to the ratio between the circumference and diameter of a circle. (Spelling it out like that shows you why he thought the symbol would catch on!)

Jones was born not far away from the Ysgol Gynradd Ty Mawr primary school which stands across the road from the Maenaddwyn menhir. Sadly the school closed down in 2010 and now appears to be a private residence, but the old school sign and the blue plaque commemorating William Jones remain.

I've no idea why the menhir was erected – whether it had religious or political significance, or both – but it's quite likely that Jones knew the stone if the road through Capel Coch has been in the same place for a few hundred years.

NB: this stone should be classified 'Access: 5' as the stone is both drivable to and accessible by the disabled. It's directly adjacent to the road, and as an earlier post on this page says, there is even parking!

There is a photo of the school on Wikimedia Commons.

This stone is near completely swamped with ivy, and now resembles a tree / bush as of June 2006. Missed it on the first pass yesterday, and wondered how I could miss this huge stone, having been a few times before... then I remembered.
