It would be hard to improve on the description given in the very informative guide I used in Shetland (written by Peter Guy: Walking the Coastline of Shetland, ISBN:1904746179) - "The broch dominates a small promontory which juts out from the NW into the loch. It is an impressive ruin with walls on the N & NE surviving to a height of 12ft. Overall diameter is 57ft and the wall is 15ft thick."

Although the impression from a distance is one of rubble, it is easy to still see the massive nature of the wall's scale and construction, and even to see evidence of the internal cells and staircase built inside the walls.

Note: Some splendid photos and nice description of this remote site recently in from pab.

Looking inland over the Holes of Scraada and the Loch of Houlland, the broch can be seen above a line of ruins. From the size of many stones in the mills, it seemed quite likely that much building material migh...

For a good idea of what the broch will have originally looked like, go to the page for the Mousa Broch.
