hallsifer visited on 19th Feb 2023 - their rating: Cond: 4 Amb: 5 Access: 2 Much, much easier to find during winter with all the vegetation dying back! Easily visible over the tops of the vegetation.

hallsifer visited on 22nd Sep 2021 - their rating: Cond: 4 Amb: 5 Access: 2 Gorgeous spot, quiet and high enough for a view across Penwith. Has a very wonderful 'vibe' to it, old and quiet and the same contemplative place as a modern graveyard. Bit of a pain to find as it's low to the ground and grassy, but not impossible if you follow the track.

A small neolithic Scillonian entrance grave consisting of a 5m diameter circular mound of stones. The kerb of larger slabs is pierced by a passageway which faces the rising of the midwinter sun after the shortest day of the year.

Bosiliack Barrow submitted by MikeAttwell : This is the only Penwith Entrance grave to be excavated to modern standards. This was undertaken in 1985 by Charles Thomas. More recently cremated bone from the chamber floor was submitted for radiocarbon dating producing dates of 1690 and 1500 cal BC. This led Charles Thomas and Andy M Jones to review all the evidence available from other excavations and to conclude that Penzance Entrance graves ... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Bosiliack Carn and a reconsideration of entrance graves by Andy B on Monday, 02 March 2015
(User Info | Send a Message)
Bosiliack Carn and a reconsideration of entrance graves, Proceedings of the Prehistoric Society, 76, 2010, Andy Jones and C Thomas

In 1984 the entrance grave at Bosiliack (SW43113422) was excavated by Charles Thomas on behalf of the Institute of Cornish Studies. It was a comparatively small example, approximately 5m in diameter encircled by a substantial kerb. A deposit of cremated bone was found within the chamber accompanied by sherds of plain pottery from three vessels. Two radiocarbon determinations were obtained on the cremated bone. The dates were almost identical, falling between 1690 and 1500 cal BC.

Because Bosiliack is the only entrance grave in Cornwall to have been excavated to modern standards, and to have had any analyses undertaken on the contents of its chamber, it is significant to the study of small chambered tombs elsewhere. This paper outlines the results from the excavations before moving on to a discussion of the use of monument and a consideration of its possible affinities with monuments elsewhere.
