Bowstones submitted by Vicky

Early Christian Sculptured Stone in Cheshire

The Bowstones are actually the upper parts of the shafts of double Anglo Saxon crosses, dating to the 9th or 10th century AD. The crosses were probably destroyed shortly after the Reformation in the mid 16th century. Two cross heads, now in Lyme Park, were ploughed up in a field near Disley Church in the 19th century and may belong to these shafts. The stones were probably erected in their current position at Bow Stone Gate by Sir Piers Legh in the late 16th century perhaps as boundary markers or guide posts.

There is a good view of the barrow of Reed Hill grom here.

Looking SE out of the Bowstones' enclosure. Some of these crosses end up looking remarkably phallic...

A close up on the stones; space and angles are limited due to a small enclosure and barbed wire.

Fantastic location - see for miles - popular with walkers since four paths converge here (shame about the barbed wire around the fencing!!).

If you are going to view this site, make sure you take a kite! This is one of the best kite flying areas around and the views are stunning. (Its also a nice walk down into Lyme Park)

I love being up by the Bowstones...as the previous poster says the views on a clear day are fantastic.

I once heard the Robin Hood legend has some links to the stones...hence 'bowstones'...anybody got anything to offer on that?

It is said that Robin Hood used to travel to the Bowstones to bend his bows...quite why? I'm not sure.

Fantastic views on a clear day, one of my favourite places.

My fathers ashes are spread near the stones. As a manchester man he spent all his life in the area you can see from here and took much delight in being in the cuntryside arround that area. I wonder if the sight was chosen for the similar reason we spread Fathers ashes as we can often look and see the white farmhouse from all over south Manchester and think of him.
