The dolmen and menhir of Saragonheiros are two monuments that are part of a larger group of megalithic funerary monuments, located between Nisa and Alpalhão, in the Portalegre district. Both were built at the Neo-Chalcholitic period and are not yet classified.
About the architecture of the Anta
Dolmen with a polygonal chamber, with seven pillars intertwined in situ and an oval plant corridor, very long, centered and differentiated in plan and elevation.
About the Menhir
The dolmen is directly associated with a possible indicator-menhir fallen by the south-east end of the corridor. It is a possible menhir with phallic form of subquadrangular section, featuring a large fracture in the longitudinal direction. There are still doubts if it is a real standing stone or if it could be something else.
About the access
These monuments can be visited at 4 km north of Alpalhão, west from the road to Nisa, on level ground. There are some old signs indicating the way to the monument. When you get to the door of a big hunting property is time to stop and park your car. The best way to reach it is to make a small walk from that point. Follow the dirt road by foot inside the hunting grounds, if the passage is closed don't be afraid to open it and always remember to close the door afterwards. In the same property is also possible to visit another monument, the Anta de Saragonheiros 2. It is also known a 3rd monument in the area but the coordinates and the condition of this anta are still a mystery to me.
About the rehabilitation of the site
There is an ongoing rehabilitation project created by the DGPC called Meganisa. The first monument that has been saved from the degradation of time was the Patalou Menhir. There are plans for this same project come to rehabilitate the dolmens of Saragonheiros, São Gens and Senhora da Redonda. The idea is to build a well structured Megalithic Route to enhance the cultural heritage of the region. Now it's just a matter of time and good will.

Aditional information:
- Follow the signs of the megalithic route.
- You are entering in private property but the access is possible.
- The entrance to the zone of the monuments may be blocked by fences, they were essentially made to demarcate the land and not allow the escape of livestock. Usually there are spaces in the fences within these demarcated areas where the access is possible. When entering in demarcated land never forget to close the access gate of the location, you need to be very aware because cattle can escape.
- There are no signs prohibiting us from entering so the access can be open but be careful when you explore every time you see this red plaques that alert you for the Hunting Zones. Remind yourself that usually hunters can only hunt at selected hunting days (Thursdays, Sundays and on public holidays).
