combuijs visited on 15th Jul 2015 - their rating: Cond: 5 Amb: 5 Access: 5 Lovely restored passage grave, easy to find, good parking place. From Nykøbing take the busy road to Sjællands Odde. Turn right just after the village of Nyrup on the Troldhøjvej. Don't drive too hard as you will easily overshoot this road. The passage grave was built around 3200 BC and is the largest on the island of Zealand. It was first investigated in 1909 and it was excellently restored in 2003 by the National Museum of Denmark.

Great to have a site like this!

Birkehøj (Birkehoj) is NOT "in Holbæk". The "county" doesn't exist anymore and anyway, Holbæk is 30 km south of Nyrup. Distances aren't great in Denmark, but people in this rural area, including myself as an newcomer, don't belong to Holbæk, but to Odsherred - recently formed as a municiaplity, but very ancient in name.

Birkehøj is near Højby and it looks pretty smashing, so I'll send a photo or two if you like. The images from Flickr are certainly not representative of the area...

Regards

Thanks for information. We would greatly appreciate photos of that site. Thank you in advance. Indeed, the "Kommun" nowadays is "Odsherred", but the database currently does not have this choice. The data used here derives from the original Danish fortidsminder database (as referenced by link on the site page), but this predates the changes in communal borders from 2007 for example. So there will be lot of other sites with older kommun-data. Anyway most archaeological literature works with the older kommun-data.
If you spot any further changes do not hesitate to add a comment so we can update the data. Regards
