combuijs visited on 14th Jul 2015 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 3 Impressive stones on a nice location. We cycled from the Sølager camping site (near the Kulhuse ferry) along the Grønnehavevej, which makes a nice quiet short 2 km tour. Would not recommend doing this by car though. Grønnæssegård is indeed privately owned, but they have signposted a route to the monument.

praeceptor visited on 21st Mar 2011 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 3 To get access to the dolmen you can either follow the fine dirtroad from the mainroad (Amtsvejen 16) until just before you'll enter the farm, then turn left and follow the separaration between the forrest and the field some 180 meter to the east, from where you can get access to another dirtroad and follow that some 60 back in direction of the farm, until it meet another dirtroad on the field. Follow that dirtroad some 400 meter to the south east, where you soon will be able to see the dolmen between the trees. It's perfectly legal to go here, only remember that you are a guest on the farmes private land. So, please be polite! Instead of walking the bit at the outskirt of the forrest, it'll also be perfectly legal to enter the farm and turn left after the first building on your left hand.

Carl's Stone

Translated from:

http://www.natmus.dk/sw43422.asp

Stone Dolmen Carl's Stone at Frederiksværk became famous all over Denmark early in 1900-century, when it was printed on the 5-krone note.

http://www.nationalmuseet.dk/graphics/temaer/Megalitter/Carlsstenen%20Pengeseddel.jpg

Not far from the water and overlooking the Frederiksværk lies the dolmen Carl's Stone amid a collection of large trees. First time, the National Museum people were on the spot was in 1862 when the drawing artist Kornerup came by. It was only a few years after the idyllic megalithic tomb was protected and registrated in March 1860th

Actually, the Carl's Stone, isn't in the archaeological sense particularly special. Hundreds like it exist across the country like dolmens, which in their basic structure does not differ substantially from Carl's Stone. What still makes this dolmen special is that in early 1900-century, it was pictured on a Danish banknote. It was the artist Gerhard Heilmann (1859-1946), who was the perpetrator of femkronesedlen. But it came close that the Carl's Stone had never ended up on a Danish banknote, as it was by a hair that Heilmann in 1908, delivered its proposal for Denmark's new series. It was literally in the last minute that Heilmann arrived at the National Bank before the deadline for proposals for the new series expired.

According to tradition, it is the Carl's Stone, which is pictured on the banknote, but over time has also other parts of the country claimed that it is their dolmen, that is pictured on the banknote. Among others, it is argued that a ldolmenl in one of the great estates of Lolland could be models for Heilmann's banknote. But the people of Frederiksværk are firm believers that it is the Carl's Stone.

The new femkroneseddel so first appeared in 1910, and Heilmann's banknote series was in use until the big money exchange shortly after the German occupation ending in May 1945. Partly in order to get the large black market for life Danmarks Nationalbank decided that summer to destroy the old banknotes, and thus also vanished femkronesedlen with Carl's Stone. It was, moreover, Gerhard Heil's femhundredekroneseddel - showing a farmer who plows his field - as in the vernacular was termed "a plowman."
