Li Muri Necropoli
Li Muri Necropoli submitted by AlexHunger : Neolithic tomb in Arzachena, Sardinia dating to between 3500 to 2700 BCE. Set of 4 kist with kerbstones, one more kist without surround and 3 small menhirs. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Necropolis in Sardegna with four cists surrounded by small kerbstone circles as well as 3 menhirs and one more cist without kerbstones. 169 meters altitude.

Additional information submitted by Drew Parsons in October 2010:
This site is an interesting and very old necropolis dating to 3500 BC making it one of the earliest sites in Sardinia. It was in use until 2700 BC. Excavated in 1939 it comprises four cist burials each with a stele and a circle of stones which would have retained a covering mound. The cists were single use burial sites. Beside these cists there are small stone boxes which are interpreted as food offering boxes.

A fifth site (shown as site 5 on the site map) is different as it was for ongoing use and comprised a passage or allée couverte with access for future burials. It is considered to relate to a different period to the cist burials.

The 1939 excavations revealed refined flint and soapstone hand made objects, beads, and a soapstone bowl with spool shaped handles, a rim and a ring base, knife blades, small axes and stone balls with holes through them interpreted as weapons suitable for close quarter fighting. Each cist had a stele with a presumed sacred meaning. Skeletal remains were too decomposed to allow analysis although traces of red ocre seem to be present on them.

The site is well sign posted from Arzachena and close to a number of other interesting sites. There is a good information centre 50 metres further up the road from the site with a ticket office, good displays and parking. As with so many sites in Sardinia young students of archaeology seem to be the guides and information centre staff and all are very enthusiastic.

Note: Exact GPS positional from handheld device.

It is shown as number 5 on the site plan (see separate photo posted by Alex Hunger), and is an allée couverte or burial passageway once covered by capstones but with ongoing access for future burials.
