Fortification in Croatia

The Iron Age Dalmatian Illyrians started to built the original Hillfort/town wall. Later Greek traders and colonist settled in with the natives. After the Roman conquest, Narona became the Roman Colonia Iulia Narona and received new additions to the wall as well as the usual Roman facilities like the forum, which is still partially extant. The town was sacked in the 5th century, completely abandoned in the 7th Century. Though now inhabited agin, the town was first excavated in 1907. At this time, many fine statues were found, some of which are now located at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford.

Detail of the wall showing the large blocks, which in contrast to other Illyrian Hillforts, have not been masoned into rectangular blocks. Still, this contrasts with the much smaller roman blocks used later. (Vote or comment on this photo)
