TheCaptain visited on 12th Aug 2005 - their rating: Cond: 5 Amb: 4 Access: 4 This is a very pleasant find. It's well signposted from the village of Pontigné, a couple of kilometres to the west along the D.171 Rue Des Megalithes, and appears on the village plan with a photograph. This is most unusual in these parts where most are very hard, if not impossible to find. Once at the dolmen, its a 400 metre walk along a footpath through the forest from the road. The dolmen itself is a very nice Angevin style allée couverte, sat in a little clearing in the forest and well tended by the local community. The main chamber is rectangular, 5 metres by 3 metres internal dimensions, not quite tall enough to stand upright in. There are two large capstones on top of two southern side slabs, one large northern one (and a gap), with one large backstone and the two closing front stones still nicely in place. The porchway entrance is still pretty much intact, and is 2.5 metres long by 1.5 metres wide, and still topped by its capstone. The chamber of course opens to the east, with a bearing of about 080°. As is so often the case, it has suffered from graffitti and fires, with lots of broken bottles laying about. Such a shame.

This pleasant but sometimes poorly used dolmen is situated just north of the D141 half way between the village of Pontigné and Baugé (to the east of Angers). There is a car park on the side of the D141 and a signposted path through the woods to the site. The path turns right after approximately 100 metres and then spits into two. Take the left hand branch which leads to the monument after another 100 metres. Being easily located and close to a town it has litter, graffiti and some evidence of fires having been lit inside the chamber. It appears to be the meeting place for teenagers too - around 20 were there with their motorbikes when I visited in April 2010, although they were all well behaved and interested that I had travelled from New Zealand to see their dolmen. I visited the site in April 2010.

Today I would rate the condition of the site 3 due to the graffiti etc, access as 5, ambience as 3, and accuracy as 5.

The dolmen is an Angevin type comprising 13 stones forming a chamber with a portalled entrance and a huge capstone now broken in two. The entrance faces east.
