I asked the owner for permission to see the stone. He is an Englishman, he gladly accepted. I crossed the fields with horses to photograph the stone

This stone is sited on a flood plain running along the bottom of a steep and heavily wooded valley. Direct access is difficult because the stone is in fields owned by a stud farm (haras) and some distance from the nearest road. You would have to cross fences dividing several fields full of horses to get to it.

However, if you cross the river near the chateau (to the NE of the menhir) and take the road up the hill (towards Menil-Hermei), you soon find a turn-off on your right - an unpaved road leading to the hamlet/farm of Le Val de l'Orne. Park at the junction a walk down, taking another right fork soon after and descending to the fields on the flood plain. As soon as you arrive at the field, cut straight across to the river and you'll see the menhir on the far bank. Brave souls with good wellies might be tempted to cross, but be respectful of the land and don't cross if there are horses in the far field.
