What a lovely stone circle this is, at the southern end of the longest ancient stone row known. Strangely, the tallest stone, 1.5 metres high, is not at the end of the row, although it looks like there may have been a tall stone here which is now fallen.
The diameter of the circle is 16 to 17 metres, and most of the stones are less than a metre tall. Several bits of stone are to be seen in the central area of the circle, but no particular structures or patterns can be made out.
The stones are not evenly spaced, and there are many more of them on the western side than the eastern side, but it is thought that the stones are all here, with little alteration having taken place over the millennia.
Update September 2019: This cairn circle is featured on the Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks (PDW) website - see their entries for the Erme Cairn Circle and the Upper Erme Row & Cairn Circle.
This monument is also recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 442445 and on the Devon and Dartmoor HER; see MDV4310 (Stall Moor Stone Circle).
The circle is also scheduled as part of Historic England List ID 1003287 (Stall Moor circle and long stone row).
