Castle Steads
Castle Steads submitted by rich32 : A view looking N over the hillfort / defended settlement. The double banks & ditch can be seen to the right of centre. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Hillfort in North Yorshire

This univallate hillfort sits on a spur overlooking Newsham, North Yorks. It measures 230m x 130m with the banks, ditches & walling in varying states of repair. It was obviously built for defensive purposes judging by its position, with steep slopes leading to becks on 3 sides. Although some of the outer bank has succumbed to landslip, much of the inner bank still remains & measures 6m (width) in places. Evidence of walling on top of the banks can be seen at the northern end. This site is on M.o.D land so permission should be sought from the range warden before accessing it.

Castle Steads
Castle Steads submitted by rich32 : About 300m south of the hillfort is a substantial bank (6.5m wide) & ditch (10m wide) which runs to the tune of 300meters E-W. Not quite sure why its in this position, but maybe it’s a later edition to the site & offered some protection to folks living just outside the original hillfort, with fences running down from the ramparts to this feature… (just my deluded thoughts only) (Vote or comment on this photo)

Castle Steads
Castle Steads submitted by rich32 : 99.9% of the walling is in a ruinous state, 5 lone stones (right of centre) stand in whats probably their original position. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Castle Steads
Castle Steads submitted by rich32 : These walls must have been some sight 2800yrs ago, been in the region of 2.5m thick & 3-4m high. Tim Laurie (2nd from right) who was guiding people round the site stands on the outside of hillfort. (Vote or comment on this photo)
